IBPS Clerk Selection Process
The IBPS Clerk recruitment does not include an interview. Selection is carried out through the Preliminary Examination followed by the Main Examination.
Candidates first have to qualify in the Preliminary Examination. Those shortlisted then appear for the Main Examination, and the marks obtained in the Main Examination are used for preparing the merit list.
The Main Examination carries 200 marks, which are converted to a score out of 100 for the purpose of provisional allotment. A negative marking of 0.25 marks for each wrong answer applies in both stages, while no marks are deducted for unanswered questions.
The selection process can be summarised as:
Preliminary Examination → Main Examination → Local Language Proficiency Test → Provisional Allotment
IBPS Clerk Preliminary Exam Pattern 2026
The Preliminary Examination is an objective-type computer-based test carrying 100 marks. The paper is divided into three sections, with separate time limits for each section.
| Test | Questions | Marks | Time |
|---|---|---|---|
| English Language | 30 | 30 | 20 Minutes |
| Numerical Ability | 35 | 35 | 20 Minutes |
| Reasoning Ability | 35 | 35 | 20 Minutes |
| Total | 100 | 100 | 60 Minutes |
Candidates must qualify in each section by securing the cut-off prescribed by IBPS. Candidates meeting the required criteria are shortlisted for the Main Examination in the ratio decided by IBPS.
IBPS Clerk Main Exam Pattern 2026
The Main Examination consists of 160 questions carrying 200 marks. The total examination duration is 125 minutes, with separate timing for each section.
| Test | Questions | Marks | Time |
|---|---|---|---|
| General / Financial Awareness | 40 | 50 | 20 Minutes |
| General English | 40 | 40 | 35 Minutes |
| Reasoning Ability | 40 | 60 | 35 Minutes |
| Quantitative Aptitude | 40 | 50 | 35 Minutes |
| Total | 160 | 200 | 125 Minutes |
Candidates are required to meet both the sectional cut-off and the prescribed overall score to remain in consideration for the merit list.
Local Language Proficiency Test
Candidates who qualify through the Main Examination are required to meet the prescribed Local Language Proficiency Test (LPT) requirements before joining the allotted bank.
The test is qualifying in nature. Candidates who fail to qualify in the required local language are not offered appointment.
Candidates who have studied the selected local language in Class 10 or above and can produce the relevant marksheet are exempted from appearing in the language test. Candidates from Assam who studied Assamese, Bengali or Bodo should therefore keep their relevant marksheet available.
IBPS Clerk Provisional Allotment
After the Main Examination, qualified candidates are considered for provisional allotment through a centralised process. The allotment is scheduled for March 2027.
The allotment is determined on the basis of factors including:
- Merit in the Main Examination
- State opted by the candidate
- Candidate category
- Bank preferences submitted during the application
- Availability of vacancies
Once provisional allotment is made, it cannot be changed.
In case two candidates obtain the same marks, the candidate who is older in age is placed higher in the merit order.
IBPS also maintains a reserve list of approximately 30% of vacancies under each category, subject to the availability of suitable candidates. Further allotments from the reserve list may be made if additional vacancies are reported by participating banks during the validity period.
